Her Name is Priyanka: A Survivor, A Mother, A Fighter
Shadows of Survival
Priyanka’s story begins in Canning, West Bengal. Born into a landless family, she grew up watching her mother toil as a domestic helper and her brother work as a plumber—until an accident ended his ability to earn. With the family struggling and little support, Priyanka was forced to abandon her education after Class VIII.
Even attempts to find stability outside home fell short. A hostel in the Sundarbans, meant to protect her, became another place of fear where younger girls were bullied. When family quarrels grew unbearable, Priyanka made a desperate choice—to leave home behind.
A Promise Turned Prison
The woman at Canning station promised safety and stability. Instead, Priyanka was drugged, trafficked, and sold into Kamathipura, one of Mumbai’s most infamous red-light districts.
The doors closed, and so did her freedom. Resistance was punished with beatings. Her tears went unheard. She was moved from one brothel to another—from Kamathipura to Budhwar Peth, and then to Pune.
And yet, even in the suffocating darkness, Priyanka clung to a fragile flame of hope. Somehow, she reached out to her mother, who fought relentlessly to bring her back.
Breaking Free
Fearing discovery, traffickers shuffled Priyanka from place to place. But justice caught up. A police raid finally led to her rescue. At the Rescue Foundation, Priyanka found shelter, protection, and—most importantly—space to breathe again.
With support from Goranbose Gram Bikash Kendra (GGBK), she reunited with her family. But reintegration was not simple. When her mother sought updates from the police, she was met with indifference and insults. The very system meant to protect them had failed.
Choosing Strength Over Silence
For Priyanka, surrender was never an option. She began working as a domestic helper and took full responsibility for raising her two children. Despite trauma, financial struggles, and domestic violence, she chose dignity over despair.
Recently, she moved to urban part of the city in search of better opportunities. With GGBK’s guidance, she submitted an application to the District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) to secure a safe place in a Cottage Home for her daughter—ensuring her child would be nurtured and educated while Priyanka built their future.
Rising, Leading, Inspiring
Today, Priyanka refuses to be defined by the violence she endured. She is a mother, a fighter, and a voice for justice. Her determination to hold her traffickers accountable and rebuild her life with pride makes her a beacon of hope for countless others.
Her story is not one of pity, but of power. From the shadows of exploitation, Priyanka has emerged unbroken—rising, thriving, and lighting the path for others who dare to dream of freedom.
