Bravery Beyond Fear: How a Teenage Girl Rescued Herself from Trafficking
Fifteen-year-old Aarohi lived a life like many girls her age—attending school, helping her mother manage the household, and dreaming of a future full of possibilities. With her father and elder brother working as daily wage labourers in a faraway city, she shouldered many responsibilities at home while continuing her education in Class 9.
But what began as an ordinary day soon became a nightmare that would test the very limits of her courage.
A Stalker Turns Violent: When the Familiar Becomes a Threat
For weeks, a local youth named Raju Mondal, who worked as a tailor, had been following Aarohi on her daily walk to fetch water. Despite community members warning him to stop, he continued his unwanted advances.
One evening, Aarohi was intercepted by Raju and another man. They forcibly dragged her onto a bike, coerced her into signing a blank paper—threatening to use it as proof of marriage—and took her to an unfamiliar location. Instead of using public transport, they hired a private vehicle at a suspiciously high cost, likely to avoid detection.
Trapped and Abused: The Days in Captivity
Aarohi was confined in a cramped, suffocating room for six days. During this time, she endured horrific physical, mental, and sexual abuse. A woman would deliver food twice a day, but the quality was so poor that Aarohi could barely eat. Another girl, also held against her will, shared the space—but the captors ensured they couldn’t communicate.
It became clear that this was not an isolated incident. The traffickers were preparing to transport both girls further for commercial exploitation, treating them as commodities in a larger trafficking operation.
An Unthinkable Escape: A Moment of Unmatched Courage
As plans were made to relocate the girls, the traffickers hired a vehicle to transport them again. They were warned not to speak or make any sudden moves. But when the vehicle stopped briefly due to a roadside altercation, Aarohi saw a narrow window of opportunity.
Spotting a nearby traffic police officer, she leapt out of the moving vehicle and ran towards him. Breathless and terrified, she shared her ordeal and, most crucially, recalled a phone number she had learned during a recent legal awareness training—conducted by GGBK and attended alongside her cousin, a survivor-turned-leader in our Bandhanmukti Survivor Leadership Unit.
That training, which had covered girls' safety, legal rights, and helpline resources, empowered her with the knowledge and presence of mind to seek help in the most dangerous moment of her life.
Rescue, Justice & Support: What Followed
GGBK was immediately alerted and worked with local authorities to ensure Aarohi's safety. She was taken to a secure location, and a formal police complaint was filed. Her statement was recorded, and efforts are ongoing to track down Raju Mondal and his accomplice, both of whom are under investigation.
Aarohi's family has stood by her side with immense strength and solidarity. With their support and GGBK’s guidance, Aarohi is now receiving trauma counselling, legal aid, and help in planning for her continued education and long-term rehabilitation.
Looking Ahead: Healing with Dignity and Purpose
Though the trauma remains raw, Aarohi is determined to reclaim her future and seek justice for what she endured. GGBK is working closely with her and her family to co-create a rehabilitation plan—including psychosocial support, legal follow-up, skill-building opportunities, and access to education.
Her bravery shows what’s possible when a girl is equipped not only with information, but also with support, community, and belief in her own strength.
